Quartz
Engineered quartz is made from crushed stone and resin. It's consistent in color, non-porous and doesn't need sealing. It can be damaged by very hot pans, so trivets are a good habit.
Granite
Granite is natural stone, so every slab is unique. It handles heat well, but it's porous and usually needs sealing periodically to resist stains.
How to choose
- Want uniform color and minimal upkeep? Quartz.
- Love natural stone patterns? Granite.
- Cook with lots of hot pans? Granite handles heat better.
- Worried about stains? Quartz is more forgiving.
Cost
Prices overlap a lot. Both depend on the specific product, slab size, edges and cutouts. Ask for quotes on a couple of options before you decide.
